Ode to NLT*

I love the NLT;
Yes, that's the book for me.
No more saying "Thou" and "Thee,"
It renders speech realistically.

No more language hard to read;
Simple words are what I need.
No more wondering what God said
From ancient phrases long since dead.

When I read this book out loud,
The "a-ha!" moments leave me wowed!
The Psalms and verses that I hear
Are finally the Truth made clear.

*NLT = New Living Translation
(sung to the tune of "The B-i-b-l-e" -- an old VBS tune)

Hi Kathy,

A friend of Rick's in the Blogosphere here! Him & I have an almost scary (just joking) similarity in our Bible translation preferences, hobbies and misc flora & fauna. I loved your Ode to NLT. Please see my post over at The Lamp about my Sister-In-Law. You are not alone in your love for the original NLT!

Peace to you in Christ Jesus,
Jim S.

Oh, Kathy... I pray for your repentance. Don't you know this (older and therefore better) ditty?

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Scofield's notes and Moody Press
I dare not trust the NIV,
But wholly lean on KJV!

Great ditty - I'm going to link this post on my site. I'm an NLT fan too - it literally changed my life. My dad's too.

Kathy... You are singing my song!... Since 1996 I have had a love-affair with the NLT and THP!

Check out www.studiedbible.org

It is under RE-CONSTRUCTION today, but if it does not work for you, come back in a few days.

Enjoying the LASB NLT --- the Bible the Ethopian would have loved to have used. He might not have needed Philip. vvr

PS: Watch out for the NLTSB --- coming in September... I Can hardly WAIT!!!!!! VR

Pastor Bob, Rick pointed out my error after I posted the ode, but I figured, what the heck. NLT2 would be my second choice anyway . . .

Kathy!

I am so glad to stumble on you after all these years. Remember the drama back in Ruston when Rick and I broke up? OMG that seems like a whole other lifetime.

You guys were obviously soulmates. I'm so glad you are healthy and happy, and hope your adoption goes through soon.

I'm in North Carolina with my sweet beau (okay, husband, but beau is so much more Louisiana) George. We were married one month after 9/11.

Please tell Rick hello, and again, I'm so glad to see you still have your sense of humor and that Rick still loves Superman. George and I both love Napolean Dynamite, and I'm stuck on 80s big hair music.

If you want to drop a line, it's curnows@nc.rr.com

Kathy,

Your "Ode to NLT" is great! Someone managing the NLT web site should post it in the Endorsements section.

God's peace and blessings to you and Rick and Elianna Ruth (and Bessie Mae)!

In Christ,
Rebecca

Here is my boring little story of how I discovered and fell in love with the NLT translation. A few months ago I had what could have turned into a serious health issue. Im 52 now and have not been in church or had any relationship with God since I was in highschool. I cant explain it but from the time this health issue began there seemed to be something spiritual connected with it. I have heard of these things happening but im not sure I believed any of the stories at the time. For the first time in many years I began to pray. After searching I found my dusty bible and opened it. The very first page that opened was in the book of John. I looked down and the very first verse I read was John 5:14. The feeling that went through me at the same time that I was reading that verse was something I can't put into words. Im a policeman and have been for 30 years now. Any emotion I had or any ability I had to cry left me many years ago. It all came back at that moment. I was a little comfused as I was not sure if I should be ashamed of myself for crying or to be happy because it happened. I flipped the pages one time back the other way and the next verse that jumped out at me, without searching for it, was Luke 11:9 and I continued reading through verse 10. This has not happened to me since then. I have also heard of this happening to others but im sure I did not believe it at the time and actually probably thought they were a little on the strange side. Keep in mind I am a bible moron. Prior to this I did not know many of the names of the books in the bible, except maybe Genisis and Revelation, did not know the order of the books in the bible, and certainly did not have even one verse memorized. I read a lot of these great blogs religiously but do not participate for that reason alone. Anyway, I continued my reading in this bible and as a couple of weeks passed by Im beginning to realize that im understanding a lot of what this bible is talking about. I remember back in my highschool days that the opposite was true. I was so frustrated back then in reading KJV that I gave up on trying to read it. Im not attacking the KJV and I thank God many people use it. After doing a little checking and reading the introduction to the translation I was reading I discovered that it was the NLT. I actually thought the bible was the bible, meaning they were all identical I had no clue about all of these different translations. Im not even sure how I got this bible to begin with. I know a lot of people attack this translation along with a few others. I can certainly say that God can speak to you, bless you, and grab a hold of you by the scruff of the neck if he feels the need to through this translation. This is and always will be my main translation of the bible. I do use one other translation for comparison reasons only.

Kathy, your "Ode to the NLT" is awesome and hits home with me as well. The NLT will always be the book for me.

My best,
Ed Hawk
